6 tips to improve your English communication skills

Reducing the speed of speaking, writing more, memorizing sentences rather than individual words are simple ways to significantly improve your ability to communicate in English.
You can remember a very long vocabulary list, know all the grammar to use, but still be confused when trying to express what you want to say. Page My English Teacher shares a few tips to help you get out of this situation.

1. Reduce the speed of speaking

Improve English communication

If you are a great speaker in your mother tongue, the expectation of the same standard when using English can still be impractical, especially at the beginning of the learning process. The advice for everyone when learning a foreign language is to never be afraid to make mistakes or pressure yourself on a perfect conversation.

2. Give yourself time to think

Improve English communication

You may worry that the person who is talking is not patient enough to try to speak as quickly as possible. This is not correct because people often want an answer that is thoughtful, which is also a sign of respect for the listener.

You should be equipped with fixed phrases to use when you need more time to think. For example:

- Why is there so much violence on TV? That’s a good question. I haven't really thought about it before. Well, I suppose ... (Why is there so much violence on TV? That's a good question. Let me think at all, I haven't really thought about this before. Yes, I suppose ...).

In this case, the person who says "sentence time" is quite good just by repeating the question and adding a few sentences. If you use this method, you will feel like you speak more fluently and not be pressured to speak quickly before being really ready.

The fixed (fixed / set phrases) phrases are arranged in a certain order, which can be verbs, idioms ... Some familiar phrases:

- during the day: during the day

- in the meantime: in the meantime, while waiting

- It’s been a long time since ...: It's been a long time since ...

- Sorry to bother / trouble you, but ...: Sorry to bother you, but ...

- Would you mind if ... ?: Do you mind if ...? (Please do something politely)

- I’m just kidding !: I'm just kidding!

3. Learn the whole sentence, not just learn words

Many people memorize a lot of words but don't know how to use them, this becomes meaningless. When learning new words, try to memorize some sentences that contain that word.

If you memorize the whole sentence, you don't need to worry if the sentence is grammatically wrong. For example, you learn the definition of "appreciation" as "getting the value of something / somebody". Please memorize the following two sentences to apply in practical situations:

- I think nó cần thiết xác định trong một relationship / tại việc.

- I appreciate all your hard work.

4. If you want to improve your communication, you must learn to listen

Learn to listen to improve English communication

When talking to foreigners, many people are often too focused on what to say, right or wrong but forget to listen to what others say. This is a big mistake because listening helps you gather words or structures or will need to use them later.

5. Practice asking regular questions to help improve communication in English
You should note that communication is a two-way process. The fact that you don't ask any questions in a long conversation can make others feel you don't care, even rude. If you have all the ideas to present, you can absolutely elicit others by asking questions. For example:

- What are your views on that? (What is your point of view about it?)

- How about you? What do you think? (What about you? What do you think?)

- Why do you think there’s so much violence on TV? (Why do you think there is so much violence on TV?

6. Practice writing regularly

It is undeniable that practice is the best way to improve communication, but writing helps you get used to and reflect on how to use English, so that words will pop up when you speak.
